To get the most out of your fitness routine and diet, you need to have the proper information in order to make the best decisions you can for yourself. Here are a bunch of ideas on how you can get into the best shape of your life and stay that way.

Set specific exercise goals. An easy way to do this is to look up fitness requirements for certain jobs, such as the FBI field agent list. Having solid goals will inspire you to keep working towards them. With a bit of determination, you can slowly, but surely, meet your goals.

You can do more than traditional abdominal exercises to build great abs. Dead-lifts and squats are shown to build ab muscles. Studies have shown that by doing these two exercises your abdominal muscles are forced to do a lot of work in order to maintain your posture while exercising.

Swimming is a great form of exercise and it doesn't put any stress on the body. When you swim you are working all the muscles in your body giving your whole body a nice relaxed workout. If you are not used to swimming then it may take awhile to get used to it but you'll come to enjoy it in time.

Strength training can help you become a faster runner. A recent study showed strengthening exercises helped runners improve their time. Runners who did eight weeks of resistance training were able to shave time off of their run. The stronger you are, the faster you will be able to run.

People often try to do abdominal exercises on a daily basis. Actually, this is unlikely to produce the desired results. Abs, like other muscle groups, require periodic rest and recovery time. Strive for 2-3 rest days in between abdominal sessions.

You should stop using a weight belt when performing most lifting exercises. Over time, a weight belt will weaken your abs and lower-back muscles. The only times that you should wear a weight belt is when you perform large lifts, such as squats, deadlifts and overhead presses.

A great way to work out your calves are to do calf raises. You should either do seating calf raises, or standing calf raises. As you build up you will be adding weights in each hand to increase the amount of weight that you calf has to raise.

Plan your meals around your workout schedule. While of course you don't want to eat immediately before or after a workout, your exercise schedule also affects the kinds of foods you should eat. Eating a carbohydrate snack throughout the day, for example, will keep your energy levels up and ensure you have the energy to work out.

Take the stairs. If you use the steps instead of the elevator or escalator whenever you have the choice, you get a mini-workout. You burn 10 times as many calories when you climb the stairs as you do by just standing. Planning to take the stairs when you can means committing to a fit lifestyle.

To stay lean, consume about 600 milligrams of calcium each day. Scientists have found that people who consume that amount (which equates to a few glasses of low fat milk) are more likely to be at a lower level of body fat than people who consume less than 600 milligrams each day.

To run faster, look to quicker, rather than bigger, strides. Having a big stride is actually inefficient for your body to develop optimal propulsion. Always try to have your foot come down in line with your body instead of in front of it. Then, use your rear toes to propel yourself forward.

Your fitness level is determined by the amount of work you put into it and how much you make these choices a part of your daily life. If you put these ideas and suggestions to good use, you will find yourself feeling and looking better in no time flat.
